Mercy With a Mission Team

Providing outreach opportunities to meet the physical needs of our community

Ni River Community Church sponsors a monthly dinner for the Thurman Brisben Homeless Shelter in Fredericksburg. Ni River’s latest theme is breakfast for dinner which has gotten great reviews from the residents of the shelter.

Starting with January 1, 2008, Ni River and the Mercy With A Mission Team has had an awesome time preparing and feeding the residents of the shelter, and looks forward to the same opportunity the 1st of each month in 2009. A strong base of volunteers is at the heart of planning and preparing these dinners. Penny Traber and Rich Chandler have been the motivators of the group, giving creativity to dinners of meatloaf, chicken, barbeques, and the world famous cheesy garlic mashed potatoes. And according to Rich Chandler “You just can’t mix 40 pounds of cheesy garlic mashed potatoes with out power tools. Men and power tools in the kitchen – it’s a beautiful thing.”

While giving to the community, the Ni River group has found a win-win situation with the coming together of heart and spirit that returns as much as it gives. The regular volunteers have been joined by so many folks that stop in occasionally to add new flavor and ideas, and are grateful for each new opportunity for fellowship and friendship.
